Over the years, I’ve learned that documentation is one of the most critical aspects of software engineering, Salesforce administration, and cybersecurity. It’s not just a “nice-to-have”; it’s the backbone of sustainable and maintainable solutions.
Without thorough documentation, it can feel like the work was never done. Sure, your solution might work now, but what happens when it breaks or needs an update? The next person (or even future you!) who has to work on it will be left untangling a mystery instead of focusing on meaningful improvements.
How many times have you revisited your own work and thought:
"Oh no… this is complex. I don’t remember how this works."
I’ve been there too.
Developing great documentation is an art, and it takes time and practice to master.
Here’s my advice:
👉 Document as you work—not after. Writing it later almost guarantees that crucial details will be forgotten. The little things that seem insignificant in the moment are often the glue that holds the solution together.
As a team, it’s worth investing in tools and practices to streamline project management and documentation. Platforms like Lucid Software, GitHub, Google Docs, Atlassian Jira/Confluence, and others can make a world of difference.
In my current role, I’m working on modernizing our development practices with tools like Salesforce DevOps and GitHub to enhance workflow efficiency and documentation quality.
